Centennial Park in Coronado has the best skyline view of San Diego. This is a great spot for family photos, couples photos, Instagram shots, and sunset pictures. Windansea is another must-visit beach in La Jolla and one of the most unique photoshoot locations in San Diego. In my opinion, it’s the prettiest beach in San Diego. The first photo below was taken with a drone and the second was taken on a open-cockpit biplane tour. If you make Hillcrest your vacation headquarters, Sommerset Suites Hotel is a best value hotel located at Washington Street and 6th Avenue.

A filling brunch is a great way to fuel up to explore San Diego’s amazing Balboa Park just a few blocks away. Hillcrest has been dubbed the Greenwich Village of San Diego.

Law Street Beach

Balboa Park is a must-see in the Hillcrest neighborhood, and it couldn’t be easier to get there from Hash House A Go Go. It is the largest urban park in the country, and sits on over 1,200 acres, sharing space with the famous San Diego Zoo. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are in bloom for approximately six to eight weeks each year — from early March through early May. If you’ll be in San Diego during this time, it’s worth a visit.

I don’t like when animals are confined to such small spaces. The larger animals are given acres of land to roam around on and it makes me feel a little better about visiting and taking photos. Cabrillo National Monument is located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula.

The best spot for family photos is, hands down, in La Jolla Cove. There’s so many options along the rocks, overlooking the ocean (with the sunset as your backdrop). Other popular spots include Scripps Pier, Oceanside Pier, Coronado and Sunset Cliffs. If you’re among those who believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you’re in luck, because breakfast is served at Hash House A Go Go from morning to night. Their original Sage Fried Chicken and Waffle Tower is Chef Andy’s creation that put the restaurant on the map.

The convenient location makes it an easy drive to any of San Diego’s other attractions, and is only one block from the neighborhood’s happening epicenter on University Avenue. Suites can accommodate four or six guests depending on style. There is a flat-bottom swimming pool and heated spa tub on the premises.

Oceanside Harbor is my best-kept secret and a place I like to visit as often as possible. It’s a small harbor with lots of colorful buildings and great photo opportunities of the boats in the harbor. Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach was named because of its awe-inspiring sunsets and it’s definitely one of the prettiest places in San Diego.

Fifth Avenue is on a one-way street going north with street parking. Among their many awards is a Nickelodeon Award for Best Breakfast Parents’ Pick, so bring the kids! Be forewarned that portions are enormous (featured on Man vs. Food), so take that into consideration when ordering and planning your itinerary for the day.

While the pier itself is not open to the public, it stretches out over the ocean like something out of a photo book, and it makes for a unique backdrop for beach photos. A photo directly underneath the pier is a must as you enjoy a stroll along this picturesque beach with views of La Jolla in the distance. Much quieter than many of the surrounding beaches, you can find oceanside peace and quiet at all hours of the day. Watch the surfers riding waves to the north of the pier 🏄  or swim and kayak to the south. This waterfront park and beach is another La Jolla classic. Watching the colourful sunsets from the cliffs, whale-watching, exploring the tide pools at low tide and climbing through the sea cave are just a few of the reasons why this spot is a not-so-hidden gem.

This waterfall and swimming hole has become one of San Diego’s hot spots. Southern San Diego feels like a world away from where I live, but some of the most spectacular places to take pictures in San Diego are near downtown — in South San Diego. When I’m not traveling, you can find me taking photos in my hometown. From east county to downtown, these are a few of the best places to photograph in San Diego from a local photographer. Deep in the heart of San Diego county lies Old Town, the location of the first Spanish settlement in California.

The eclectic neighborhood is a symbol of culture and diversity. It’s an urban neighborhood with character, and an inclusive multi-ethnic and gay-friendly vibe. A casual stroll down University Avenue in this trendy neighborhood reveals stylish boutiques, vintage clothing stores, ethnic and themed restaurants, wine bars, and a vibrant nightlife.

Southern California has endless options for a delicious brunch, but they are not all created equal. This one-of-a-kind restaurant serves up an award-winning brunch in San Diego that you need to experience. Hash House A Go Go is located within two minutes of Balboa Park. When you leave the restaurant, go right on Anderson Place and right on 6th Avenue to Laurel Street/El Prado and turn left into the park.

The restaurant brought good ol’ American Midwest comfort food to Southern California’s hippest neighborhood. Since first opening in 2000, the restaurant has burst onto the culinary breakfast scene moving into select neighborhoods in cities across the country. To see where the magic began, make your way to 5th Avenue near historic Balboa Park.

Hash House is a high energy, casual restaurant that is often noisy; be ready. The restaurant is open early mornings to mid-afternoon, closes for late afternoon hours, and reopens for the dinner hour and into the night. As a San Diego local photographer, the best spots for Instagram photos in San Diego are Balboa Park, The Flower Fields, Potato Chip Rock, Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Cove and Torrey Pines Gliderport. Another photogenic spot at low tide is Swamis in Encinitas.
